Kenya July 2010

I have to say I didn't really want to go. Don't know why. Maybe I had just had such a busy year that it was one more thing to be completed - and term hadn't even finished - and we had to pack and be off. I missed farewell speeches - both my own as I was officially "retiring", and those of close friends. We had also cancelled a two week luxury cruise round the Med (something we had never done before) in order to go - and I felt (I think Colin felt the same) I owed it to the poorer part of the world to vist them and see what we could do. So two days before the end of term, we found ourseves trundling up the motorway in a minibus with seven students and Richard. - Heathrow first stop.

The overnight flight was uneventful and Nairobi greeted us with a warm - maybe slightly wan - smile. There was not enough spece in the minibus for our luggage and us - so we tried to make sure we had enough clothes to last us the first few days then the cases went one way - and we went the other.

Europena looking roads quickly gave way to dirt tracks - and those gave way to potholes punctuated with a few yards of smooth terrain - a bit like the morse code I guess. Everyone walked everywhere and cars travelled both sides of the road - wherever they could find a bit of smoothness.

First stop was Lake Naivasha and whilst the accommodation was not top hotel standard, it was passable and the food fine. The swimming pool was mosquito infested but the students didn't mind - and we were all OK. We walked around a nearby nature reserve, getting up close with giraffes and got up at 5.30am the next morning to try and spot hippos in the nearby lake.
